About the Artist

In 2005, Amy Scott Metcalfe moved to the temperate rainforest in Vancouver, British Columbia from the verdant low deserts of Tucson, Arizona. This change of climate and urban location renewed her fascination with street photography, drawing inspiration from the “Vancouver School” of photo-conceptualism, while retaining her interest in the “New Topographics” and a focus on altered landscapes. With a background in classical archaeology, art history and scientific photography, she views image sites and fieldwork through the lens of history and material culture, seeking the markings of human interaction in the natural environment. As a professor at the University of British Columbia, she is drawn to the thresholds of understanding that are located in the spaces between the natural and cultivated landscapes of the university campus and its surroundings. Her technical experiments in rephotography, visual soundscapes, and image juxtaposition draw upon and strengthen her research and pedagogical practices.
